[HG Motorsports] CLA250 Intercooler and Downpipes Now Available!

Our performance intercooler will virtually eliminate heatsoak which robs these cars of power after only a few seconds of sustained acceleration at full throttle. A fully stock CLA250's factory intercooler does a good job of dealing with the heat put out by its forced induction system during normal street driving but even a stock CLA250 will benefit from upgraded cooling capacity if it is driven hard. Tuned CLAs begin to see the effects heatsoak surprisingly quickly, after only 1 or 2 laps at the track or a few acceleration runs you'll start to notice the reduction in power. Our larger heat exchanger will add a few horsepower on its own but it should be combined with our ECU tuning to realize its full potential. Because of the extremely adaptive nature of the CLA ECU, you will not need a specific tune for the intercooler, our normal Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes will work perfectly! To put it simply, these cars target specific power levels and will reduce their targeted power as temperatures rise. The upgraded intercooler lets you hit the highest power targets more consistently, more often, and for a lot longer before intake air temperatures rise!

Our downpipes are also available to order now, we have a few catted and catless versions in stock now but are working on updating our website with pictures and info for the DPs. For now, you'll only see a placeholder image (of the midpipe) on that page.

We have longer videos / sound clips incoming but for now, this quick teaser should give you a taste of what our catless race downpipe sounds like combined with our performance catback exhaust system.

Gains from the downpipe will be dependent on tuning but will typically be in the 10-15hp range. We offer the 200 cell catted downpipe as an option for owners who do not want to tune their ECU, this version can be used without a tune and will offer small power gains and a noticeable improvement in turbo spool along with a slightly louder exhaust note. The catless downpipe will give you the maximum available power gains by completely eliminating the restriction of the catalytic converter but it is designed to be used in conjunction with our ECU tune which disables the check engine light (caused by a catalyst efficiency check) and also includes mapping changes to account for the much quicker-spooling turbo and also the reduction in exhaust gas temperatures. Forcing air through a very restrictive catalyst creates a lot of heat at the factory downpipe, removing the cat allows exhaust air to smoothly flow through and will not create a hot spot. Any quality tune won't push the engine hard enough to send exhaust gas temperatures to unsafe levels, overly hot EGTs will reduce turbo life and can be an indication of overly aggressive AFR or ignition timing, but with a catless downpipe, we can safely move to slightly more aggressive mapping.

@HG - I have noticed the cat temps run about 1500F when running around 80 on typical freeway runs ... is that typical in your opinion??

Yes, 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit is common at the catalyst. Exhaust temperatures at the manifold before they go through the turbo are roughly 300 degrees higher!
