I line up the side mirror to the official "AMG Parking Only" sign which is there to ensure no one else parks in the spot (in my own garage).

The best part, it works for different size cars. I once had a single car garage, and my wife had a Ford Escort. I had to put my Cadillac DeVille in the garage once, and the ball worked perfectly.

    1. The electronic button on the bottom of the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel (in LHD cars, at least) is the emergency brake. It is also sometimes called a parking brake, hand brake or ebrake. As can be seen in this thread alone, people call it different things. It serves the same ultimate purpose as the hand brake situated between the seats on many older (especially foreign) cars and the small brake engaged by foot in SUVs and many older American cars.

    2. The "P" button in the center console (on the 45) is the equivalent of a parking "gear" or position on an automatic transmission. As Pete pointed out, it's just a pawl that stops the gears from spinning. While the OP is accurate in pointing out that the DST isn't technically an automatic, it also isn't just a manual, in the traditional sense of the word. It's a hybrid of sorts. The "P" doesn't, however, engage a brake of any sort. He was right in initially thinking of it as the "P" in a traditional automatic.

    3. I think the OP was also confused about the HOLD feature that electronically keeps the brakes engaged after you've held down the brake pedal. To the best of my knowledge, this feature does NOT engage the emergency brake. It just keeps the brake pads engaged until you touch the accelerator or brake pedal again. I could be wrong but I'm venturing a guess the OP might not realize that an emergency brake is typically a completely separate braking system from the brakes that stop your car. When you apply an emergency brake, you aren't just engaging the same pads that would otherwise slow your car down during routine braking.

    4. As others have pointed out, opening the driver's door will (below certain speeds) engage the Park function on the transmission. It does NOT engage the brakes or parking brake.

Actually, I believe this is incorrect. If you push the emergency brake, it will engage. I will double check but I don't think pushing it again will disengage it or, really, do anything. I'm so used to doing it that I don't even pay attention to the process anymore but I'm fairly certain must pull the electronic button towards you to disengage the emergency brake on the 45. This is done to ensure that you don't accidentally disengage the brake just by tapping it. On the other hand, pushing "P" on the transmission will repeatedly engage and disengage the function, again, having nothing to do with the car's brakes or ebrake.

    -Eric

Agree with you on the emergency brake button. You have to pull to disengage and push to engage.

I used a mark on the wall in the garage to help me with parking. I line it up with the B-pillar from the driver's seat. When the front edge of the B-pillar lines up with the mark on the wall then I stop.

Your OWN driveway? Too much luxury!

When I was a boy, we had to park on the freeway.

    The inside safety lane.

Then we had to run across all 5 lanes, dodging traffic, to get to our cardboard box below the off-ramp.
