    P0128 Check Engine Light

    Hey all,

My 2014 CLA45's CEL came on the other day. I used a OBDII sensor and determined the error code is P0128 (coolant thermostat). I verified the engine is not running hot so I scheduled a trip to the dealer. Has anyone come across this? Ideas of what the damage might be, cost wise?

    Thanks in advance!

some folks have reported water line issues ... such as bad water pump impellers etc
so won't be surprised if thermostats get sticky or the related sensors get wonky
hopefully it's just a thermostat related fix and while you're at it change the belt and check the water pump for weeps
how many miles you got now?
(i recall very early <10k water pump failures for several 2014 cases back in time)

well not too many miles but sometimes it's the luck of the draw
but see if you can wiggle/disconnect/reconnect the sensor connections ... if the code disappears upon restart then it may just be a bad sensor or bad wiring
a persistent code may lead to a stuck thermostat and if in the closed position the engine is toast, especially M133s
if you notice "longer" warm up times then it's stuck open or staying open too often
either way might be a safe thing to bug an indie shop-- or get some coffee&donuts at a dealer 8-)

Thanks for the advice. Engine temperature has been reading fine so I don't think it's stuck closed. DC weather has been getting very warm these mornings so it's hard to judge the warm up time. Shop appointment is tomorrow. I'l report back.

    well just for your reference:
for the 250's M270 motor on a normal 68~70F day with 45~50%RH it takes 9~10min of grandpaw driving to reach ~195F

Update: Took car to the dealership and they want ~$1200 for the repair. I confirmed with the dealership that the part is roughly $135 dollars and the rest is labor. They said yes, I said bye. I'm now shopping for a certified mechanic to work on my car. Does anyone have any recommendations in the DMV area?

The coolant thermostat. The guy was pretty chill. He told me the thermostat costs $135 but Mercedes sells it for a little over $200.
