It had to be a design or engineering flaw, because I had 7 of them put on in 6 or seven years. I got between 10 and 20 thousand miles from them. But , I never paid for them since they were always under warranty. At the time, I was running a Kmart that had auto service. So when I saw those first green drips, I just pulled into the auto shop and the car was ready for me at the end of the day. My mechanics speculated that there was trouble with the tensioning device for the belt and pulley that ran the water pump. It was the first time I had ordered a car completely optioned the way I wanted it, and I loved it. Because it was so convenient to get fixed, I lived with it. Never before or since, have I ever had to replace a water pump.
Have you had cars with high mileage, or do you always get rid of them before they have loads of miles on them? I've had water pumps go on various cars after lots of miles.

Lately, cars have gotten so complicated, I try to keep them in warranty. That said, I can't remember a car that I ever put 60,000 miles on. I rarely buy tires, and can't think of a time when I have replaced brake pads. My wife has tended to keep her cars much longer, but drives so little that she never needs tires or brakes either. My last car, the Genesis, was a three year lease that I turned in with 28,000 miles. Now that I am retired, this CLA will probably have less than 25,000 miles on it when I return it in January of 2018.

All my cars have had a crapload (technical term) of miles on them. Many parts have gone on these vehicles. I hope to keep this car for a long time as well. I suppose if you sell your car before 60,000 miles, you save on tires.

Don't know why, but I enjoy switching cars every few years. I enjoy the test driving and even the purchase negotiations. On the other hand, I still have some Tshirts I wore in college almost 50 years ago. My wife says I'm fascinated by shiny things.

I've never had any problems with the water pump in any of my vehicles and my CLA with nearly 30,000 is no exception. My Honda had 274,000 miles on the same water pump. I usually get it replaced when I have the timing belt replaced but the Accord had a timing chain so I just let it keep going until I saw any signs of leaking. Never did. Oh one more thing... Let go METS!!!

Who doesn't? And, they take up a lot less space than a car collection.

Obviously a bad part. Unfortunate, but not that serious. It was caught early, so no issue other than replacement. Have you had other issues
since ownership? If not, I would say she is over reacting. My 1.3 cents.

Just bumping this thread. My water pump just went on a 2014 CLA 250. 19000 miles on it. Engine was cold then getting on the highway, the temp just started shooting up until it was in the red. I took about 20 sec to get to a safe spot to stop and turned engine off. No CEL or warning messages.

Dealer said coolant levels were fine but something was stuck open and they replaced the pump. Got it back today and so far it's ok, but it feels sluggish and there's a new smell, can't put my finger on it, but some kind of fumes.

It's a lease though and I'm turning it in in a few months (or maybe a few weeks if anything else pops up).
