2014 CLA 250 Transmission "Issue"

I used to be a BMW boy and was quite active on E46 fanatics back in the day but have grown out of them and their continuous issues and am a very happy owner of a CLA 250 and a GLE400 at the moment. Just joined this forum and happy to be here! :D

I have 113k miles on my 2014 CLA 250 both original tranny and engine. Car is not displaying any CEL's or any codes on the dash that I can see.

Problem: 30% of the time when normally accelerating through 2nd,3rd, and 4th gear during the change in gear I will get a few hard thumps and I'll be stuck in the current gear and it will go to 7th gear after a few seconds and then stay there not downshifting in any way until I get to a stoplight and it will drop to 1st gear and then act normal and then possibly display this same issue when accelerating again or not at all that day.

2-3 months ago it happened for the first time and did not happen again for about a month. now it is happening more regularly. To help this community better understand the situation when this happens the eco button is locked out. I can't press it and get the green light to go on or off (I drive with eco off). I also can't cycle between manual sport or economy mode until I restart the car.

My reason for posting is I have looked through I'd say 40-50 transmission threads on this site and haven't found one thread with the exact or similar issues. I've read the TCU is a somewhat common issue on our trannies.

I'm hoping and don't think the transmission is bad as I drove the car yesterday for almost 5 hours without it happening once but on other day's it happens almost all day and as stated above is happening more frequently. This issue is almost impossible to replicate as it's not completely clear it's getting progressively worse as like I said some days it does not happen at all.

TIA for reading through this whole post and look forward to any ideas y'all might have before I go too frustrated and just take it into the shop.

Welcome to the CLA Forum 747Lover:)
What was the mileage at the last transmission service?
Was it done at an MB dealer?

I purchased the car with around 65k on it and unaware if the previous owner had done a fluid change. I also haven’t serviced the transmission with a fluid change since I purchased it. Most likely it has original fluid in it.

Due a gearbox oil change every 60-80k which may help

Suggest transmision service at an MB dealer.
It’s a 2014, when was the last time the main battery changed ? The transmission is controlled by software and the electronic sensors. You might to change out the auxiliary battery as well.
I changed out my batteries and it fixed a number of electronic gremlins.

A few years ago I felt the start stop eco mode was rougher than usual and read online it could have been the aux. battery. I replaced the aux. battery.
Now that I’m thinking about it I’m not sure the last time I replaced the main battery. It definitely has some years on it but also the car starts and has no obvious main battery issues. I was considering doing a fluid change in the tranny but it’s $450 and hesitant because if it is indeed the tcu I just wanted to do what the problem is. I guess this could be the first signs of the battery aging but hard to imagine the battery has such a strong connection to the transmission.

To give you context in my main battery change, my CLA also had no CELs thrown for a weak battery. Car starts normally, but I had electronic gremlins, blind spot monitoring malfunctioning when the outside temp is cold, and the auto start/stop function not working. Car seems to drive fine, however, gas consumption is poor.

I changed out the main battery, and all the above issues were fixed. Fuel consumption is back where it was when it was brand new. I can't stress the criticality of a good strong battery status, it affects so many parts of the car's operation.

Hey great idea on the battery! Just came back from Autozone and they tested my battery and the cranking health failed. Interstate battery is only 38 months old so fairly young. Clearly I need to get my main battery replaced and I’m guessing that is the next step. Hopefully it’s just the battery and not the transmission. Crazy how they might be connected. I will report back once I’ve changed the battery.

This happened to me back in the day, 2014 CLA45. I took it to the dealer, they reset the TCU and it went away.

Installed the new battery last night and oh my way to work this morning the same issue happened again stuck in 7th gear until I came to a stop and restarted the car. :(

I’m going to call the dealer and share the issue with them to see if they have any recommendations.Maybe they can reset the tcu
might be a failing tcu
sucker has complex internals
replacement may be needed
I have some great news. The issue happened again and finally threw a code. P0339 which is crankshaft positioning sensor. I’ll be replacing both and hopefully good to go

I just had mine replaced last week. I had the same issue once stuck in Eco.

Seems good on that since.
I dont know it if related, but on a clod start, but downshift are kinda slow... 🤔

I will see after replacing the sensors if there’s any change but jeez this cars transmission is the worst/jerkiest I’ve ever had. I hate the tranny!
