OEM Air intake hose replacement?

5253 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  pa4ul
The plastic boot section of my air intake hose (edit- I accidentally wrote manifold), has a hole in it, the heat from the engine seemed to make the plastic brittle over time and cracked it, leading to a decent size hole. Upon noticing I tossed duct tape over it and ordered a new replacement part, which I have in possession.
The part looks like an easy install, snap off and snap on.
Curious if anyone else has replaced theirs and had an issues or anything before I do the install tommorrow? I searched the sub and only can find posts about aftermarket upgrades.

Hopefully we are on the same page. I noticed I had a typo and wrote manifold in my post. But meant the air intake hose. I fixed it since. I will update with more info for you.

I'm thinking that this is a widespread defect, which can cause harm and therefore should be officially reported.

I didn’t. I actually thought this thread got auto-deleted by the bot-mod so I let it go. I still have the original part that I changed out in a box at home, I can take a pic to show you guys the damage. This was no tiny hole, it was about 1.5 inches x 4 inches. I’m also kind of shocked it didn’t cause any engine issues, because where the hole is located, it would cause hot air to get sucked in and recycled right back off the engine.

Once I got it off the vehicle, I actually found the hose was also damaged. The cloth material for the actual hose was tearing at the grooves. This thing was all messed up.

if anyone else has issues and doesn’t want to get burned by the stealership, I would recommend you replace it yourself. The part was around $70 shipped and was a really simple snap off/snap on process. The boot closest to the radiator was a bit tight getting back on, but no more than a few minutes to complete.
Hey, I didn’t take a pic, but this topic can be referenced. My air intake looked exactly the same as in the pics from this thread.

This has happened to me as well. I am currently seeking a lawyer for a class action on this. If anyone is interested in joining it, let me know here.

I know it's an older post but Michael 777 did you ever further explore that option of class action? I also discovered a crumbling intake but only after finding crumbling coolant fittings. Hard to describe but the tubes off the top of the coolant reservoir, the o e that goes to the top of the engine. Same thing... crumbled when lightly manipulateing it while changing the resivior, because of its faulty bottom leaking.

No pics of the other part, but I've worked on some older cars, like early 80s never have I seen plastic crumble so easily... it's a 2014 should all still be good! Do the other years have these problems or just 14s?

Yes, I took it to a lawyer a few weeks ago and gave them all the info but they haven't taken the case. Maybe Mercedes' lawyers are too tough? I will probably try another lawyer and see what they say in the next month or so....will post the results here.
legal angle will need many potential plaintiffs
if 5000 of us bugged them they might do something
the ac mold case was a good study … they dropped the cla owners yet kept the gla class in the settlement despite identical hardware and complaints
very curious
this has definately happened to my 2018 X117 CLA250 - tabs crumbled when ran my fingers over it, need a to get it replaced soon before the hole gets bigger

Hopefully you’ve gotten it fixed since then.

Imagine how many people are driving around with the defective hose on their car and don’t even know. it seems most Merc owners just take them into the dealer for service and don’t even look under the hood.
I just discovered mine has the same issue. Bought used. Tried to do a transmission drain and fill new filter etc. I’m a mechanic this was a clean car old guy owned it. As soon as I went to move the air box the entire carpet air intake crumbled. Currently being held together with duct take. Till I can go to the dealer for a replacement tomorrow. Anyone know what there temp normally runs at too? I’m a ford tech never had German cars before. I’m running a bit over 80 rn on a 2014 Mercedes cla 250 front drive. Thanks in advance!

Temperature is about normal. Mercedes tend to run a little higher in temp than other cars.

the air intake hose seems to be a typical problem. It’s a cheap part to replace fortunately. Aside from the plastic boot crumbling apart, the carpet hose section also ripped apart once I pulled it out of the car. I’m no mechanic and I was able to do the replacement myself so it should be easy for you.
For anyone with an aftermarket replacement like the K&N has that held up well to the heat?

I have about 5000km with the AEM cold air, seems to be doing alright so far. It seems to be a thicker, more durable plastic than the stock plastic. My only complaint is that the fitment isn't quite perfect so it doesn't sit right in my car. That, and the fact that it's not as easily serviceable as the stock airbox

Resurrecting an old thread here. I have the same issue and at the same time I noticed it, I got a P0299 underboost code. Does anybody know if it might be related? Intake pressure off or something because extra hot air coming in through the hole?

a p0299 might be the hose that runs from the front of the motor to the rear. Pretty expensive part. Its the pcv system and Mercedes normally recommends replacing the entire hose. You might inspect the hose thoroughly to see if you can see any visible cracks but mine was very very small and you would never see it without pulling the entire system out.
