This just happened to me today while at work it has been raining here in Houston the last couple of days. I have a 2015 Mercedes Benz CLA250 when i got in my car to go get some lunch i turned the car on and it did not start but everything else did (radio,ac, etc.) i turned it off and tried again this time the car did not start but the message popped up saying to not shift gears and to take to a dealership. I tried it one more time and the car started the message came off but my engine light is still on. I took the risk to drive it down the street and it worked fine. I parked it turned off and on and it was fine (engine light still on). I just wanted to see if anybody had advice as to what i should do.

Welcome Serg to the CLA Forum:)
Could be caused by a number of issues, including battery.
Suggest your best next step is to check for codes. If you don't feel it is convenient to visit the dealer, AutoZone will do it at no cost, but phone them first, due to the virus.
The codes your CLA shows will pinpoint the specific areas, which need attention and this is what the dealer will likely do as the first step in creating a diagnosis.
Other Members will likely have additional comments.

I had this same issue twice (August 2020 and September 2020). Took it to Christian Brothers (certified auto) the first time and they replaced the TCM (Transmission Control Module), the second time they found the battery was completely dead and would not hold a charge. After reading up on this issue, I would suggest checking the following......

1.) battery (amp draw and voltage) even though the lights and everything gets power there is not enough volts to power up the vehicle. If it is the battery then replace and problem should go away. (FYI the battery is not cheap - $199)
2.) check the diagnostic codes and if you get a TCM code then replace the TCM (only replace if battery replacement does not work)
3.) Brake Light Switch (last resort and is very easy to replace, part alone costs up $22)

You are indeed reviewing the correct thread. What are the car details?

Any feedback on how long the battery lasts in CLA’s. We got about 3 years out of the 2016 car before it went from perfect to zero overnight.
I just changed out my 2 batteries. They were in the car for 6 years. The main battery was down to 31% to 248 CCA. My stop-start is working again

you have to change your battery. That is it.

2015 Cla 250 here 👋
Just had this happen today. Message popped up warning not to switch gears and to visit the dealership, wouldn’t start the first go but did the second. Drove it, stopped it. Wouldn’t start at all, took about 9 try’s before it would start again and this time the check engine light remained on as I proceeded to drive it to a local car part place, got the battery tested (31%) changed it myself on the spot. After that it turned on perfect, check engine light was off and even the eco start stop started working after not working for 7 months ish. hope this information helps for anyone else, the gears shifted just fine but dead battery seemed to be the culprit? Also would anyone else know why the battery light didn’t come on or any other battery related warnings since the issue was seemingly the battery? Going back tomorrow to check the alternator and maybe do an OEM read just incase. But it drove fine after battery replacement. Here’s to hoping that’s all it was.

Hi. Has it occurred again since you changed the battery?

Hi. Has it occurred again since you changed the battery?
Hello!
so it’s been 9 days since the problem, me and my girlfriend have driven the car almost everyday and it hasn’t had any issues since then, we also went and tested the alternator, voltage regulator and the battery again and all seems to be well in that department. Our prior battery had been in the car for atleast a year and a half that we know of, but it was preowned so I’m sure longer than that, probably just need to be changed. If anything happens or if any issues arise I’ll be sure to post here again. :)

Hi
Can you tell me what battery you got to make the shift problem stop. What was the voltage and how many amps (Ah) there was. Thanks for your reply the last time.

Hey!
I’m pretty sure it was just a North Star AGM, groups 48 775 cc amps. I would check compatibility with your type of car and batteries available but it should just need a replacement, I believe the battery that was in my car was just factory stock or whatever Mercedes originally had before. The North Star batter is almost an inch smaller so it’s a smaller fit in the battery compartment but that doesn’t matter much.

If changing the battery doesn’t help or there seems to be other error messages etc, I would check with the dealership to make sure it isn’t something wrong with your gearbox, there could be other issues but for me it was just the battery! Hopefully it’s simple like that for you as well,

This was the video that I referenced, it’s better to change the battery yourself, most places charge way to much to replace. hope it helps you as well! :)

Hi All!

The “Service Required: Do Not Shift Gears, Visit Dealer” message has popped up for me and I’m trying to avoid a visit to the dealer. I’ve read through this thread and it’s looking as though it may simply be a battery issue (fingers crossed). My car’s currently at a shop waiting to get towed to the dealer if it doesn’t get sorted there. I’ll list the series of events below and apologies in advance for coming off naive, I don’t know anything about cars so please take it easy if I sound not so smart about all of this:
  1. Friend was driving car, didn’t pay attention to fuel level and the car ran out of gas. While on the side of the highway, waiting for a friend to bring gas, the car was on (stereo system) to charge his phone while we were waiting (obviously a dumb move).
  2. Friends show up with gas, car won’t start because the battery has now died.
  3. Try jumping my car with cables; takes about 10 minutes before any lights even power on and the car ends up not starting; we continue trying for about 30 minutes. Between one of the times where the lights on the dash would power on, and before the battery dying again, I see the “Service Required: Do Not Shift Gears, Visit Dealer” message pop up. After the battery powers on again, the message is gone but the engine light is on now.
  4. AAA shows up and gets the car started but now the car won’t shift out of the park position.
  5. A different AAA guy shows up to “reset” something via the battery under the hood (I didn’t know that the car has an auxiliary battery and I don’t know where that one’s located so I’m clarifying that it’s the battery under the hood). Whatever they were trying to accomplish with that “reset” doesn’t work (I think they’d said something about resetting something so they could at least get the car into neutral).
  6. 3rd AAA guy shows up with the tow truck, gets the car onto the bed and towed to my house. On the way home he says he thinks that my friend may have “crossed the cables” when jumping the car (I'm certain this didn't happen because while he was getting the cables connected he was showing me where/how to do so, for future reference).
  7. A mechanic friend of mine lends me a Scanning Tool and walks me through the process of clearing codes. Two Engine Codes will not clear; first code reads —> P06DA00: The actuation of the valve of the oil pump in the combustion engine has an electrical fault or open circuit. There is A General Failure. -Current, Pending. And the second code reads —> U010387: Communication with the electronic selector lever module has a malfunction. The message is missing. - Pending.
  8. Next, he had me check the fuses. The first fuse box (the one in the engine compartment) has three fuses that don’t make the test tool light up (the following numbers refer to the fuse assignment per a diagram found online): 220 (a small red 10 fuse), 239 (a small green 30 fuse) and 202 (a small blue 15 fuse). The second fuse box (interior compartment on passenger side) has one fuse that doesn’t light up: 35 (a large green 30 fuse). I replace all four and test them again and they still do not light up.
  9. Get car towed to a European auto shop (has a good reputation). He’s able to clear all the codes except for the first Engine Code (P06DA00: The actuation of the valve of the oil pump in the combustion engine has an electrical fault or open circuit. There is a General Failure. -Current, Pending.) He orders a new brake switch to check if that’s the issue and that ends up not being the problem because the car still will not shift out of park.
  10. He calls and tells me that I should take it to the dealer at this point.
So, that’s where I’m currently at with all of this; car still won’t shift out of park. The mechanic had said that he “checked the batteries and they’re both good” — which is concerning because this may mean it’s not a battery issue (?) But a friend said that the batteries could be “testing as good and have enough power to start the car, but that there may be a bad cell” so to check them again; also said to check the alternator. I’m going to ask the mechanic to check these things, but don’t you think he should’ve/would’ve checked these things already, being that he’s an experienced mechanic (?) And if it has something to do with that Engine Code regarding the oil pump valve, wouldn’t he be able to check/fix that (?) Any help/advice with this would be much appreciated! Going to visit mechanic this morning to ask him to re-check the batteries, etc. I’ll update as I get new info. Thanks, again!
