As my name/title suggests I'm unsure, I took a CLA out for a test drive at the weekend: very nice! However the only requirements i have are that my new car has leather, heated seats and sat nav ( extra toys welcome but not required). The problem is that at the moment I can get an e class cheaper ( over £1000) than a CLA ( on paper before haggling) that meets these requirements. Surely the e class is 'more car for my cash'

Any advice/ comments?

I see. Well, the big cars (E-class, 5-series, etc.) is way of my economic range, so I have to consentrate on CLA. I drove CLA 220 CDI with sport suspension for some kilometers in april, and today I will borrow CLA 180 with comfort suspension for a longer ride. I am a cruiser in the traffic and I think comfort suits me best.

If you get E-class cheaper than CLA there is only one advice: Buy E-class. In my country the cheapest E-class with diesel engine starts £15.000 above CLA 180.
I second this advice completely, unless the E is seriously outside of your wants and needs for a car.

Here in the US the E class starts about $20k above the CLA, so sounds similar to the price difference in the UK.

I thought that but it's definitely the new e class; I am comparing against the CLA220 rather than the 180. I make a base e class ( which includes my requirements) at about £1000 less than the CLA with the options added!

A brand new E-Class for less than the price of a brand new CLA? Can you buy a few E-Class at that deal or is it a VIN-specific deal? I don't care if the deal is on the "old design." As others have pointed out, the base price of an E-Class in the US is over $20K higher than a CLA. I'd buy as many of those E-Classes as I could, garage them until I was able to flip them on eBay (at a very nice discount off MSRP), and take the proceeds from their sale and buy whatever car I want...and then put a hefty sum in my pocket for a rainy day...or 7. :) lol
