If the 2.1L Turbo Diesel is an option on the 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA in the US will you opt for it? If yes why, and if no why?

My girlfriend currently drives a VW Golf with the TDI. I love turbo diesel power. Great gas mileage, great power and torque... what's not to like? I'd prefer to stick with a diesel unless we end up going with the AMG version.
Diesel for me. I have a 2010 Jetta Sportwagon TDI that gives me easy 40 mpg.

The VW TDI is an amazing engine for sure. Great power/torque and great gas mileage. I can get 41 MPG easy on the highway with hers, and thats doing 80mph!
Has Mercedes said anything about the diesel for the US market? I was under the impression that M-B only mentioned the 2.0L gasoline engine in its press release, etc.

The official word is that it is an "outside possibility" for the US. So no confirmation yet...
I'm quite familiar with VW's diesel but not Mercedes'. What do people know about Mercedes' 2.1L diesel?

My buddy had an E350 BlueTec and absolutely loved it. I haven't owned one personally though so I can't comment.

this and rumor is we won't see one in the US :(
Lets keep our fingers crossed for a diesel option here in the states.

now that would be great and much better gas performance!

Diesel always gets better gas mileage... but one thing to keep in mind when figuring out the MPG/$ is that here, at least in the states Diesel is more expensive.

But, the free torque increase is also nice :)
I hear the craze about the mpg record of the diesel engine but given diesel fuel prices in U.S., I wonder if the trade-off is economical. In Atlanta area, diesel fuel is close to $4/gal again.
I'll trade in my ageing bimmer for a 2.1 / 2.2L diesel CLA today. I really hope they get it here and soon.
If they push it for next year, it will end up fighting for volumes against the new c class.
I agree, its imperative to have it here, September at the latest.
The diesel engine in the CLA, A and B Classes is a Renault dCi engine. Renault does not sell diesel cars in any country that has strict emission controls, so it's highly unlikely that this Renault engine can be re-engineered economically to meet US/Canadian emission standards. EU-5 and EU-6 standards allow far much too particulate matter and NOx. So that leaves the M270 gas engine....
A CDI would be preferred since my background is in economy, and this is my 1st foray into something that isnt JUST about MPG and total ownership cost. I know alot of ppl want a 350HP oil burner, and thats cool, but a part of me will always want economy, so id steer that route. Now, that being said, after talking to my dealer, the CDI is apparently not on the option list as far as he can tell. Its, and im sure this isnt new info, the 250, 250 4MATIC, and in the spring of 2014, the AMG. I cant wait for the CDI to perhaps show, im just gonna go order my 4MATIC as soon as I can.
Good idea because the Renault diesels (all the A/B/CLA diesels are Renault engines) will not be sold here in the foreseeable future.

Even the gasser can be driven very economically, as I found out on a fairly long road test of the mechanically identical B 250. Driven carefully, 35 US MPG should be attainable. The 4MATIC system will eat up some of that economy though.
Ya I figured the 4MATIC would do that, just with the New England winters, it would probably come in handy. Its sad really that they didn't make the option to open with a CDI, I believe that would have opened an entire new sales segment to MB.
Well because of the high fuel cost i would choose 2.1 diesel thought the draw back would be a bit higher maintenance cost.
