Comfortness of CLA45

Hi,

I ordered my45 in S. Korea (@ Feb. 2014). My dealer said maximum delivery-time may be about one year, so I'm still waiting my45.

**AMG driver package is basically included to CLA45 in my country. So my45 may have AMG sports suspension.

I want to ride cla45 as a daily car, however many reviewers point out the suspension is too hard to drive in daily or urban use. (Some reviewers even warned of the daily use of the CLA45.)

My question is that "Is the comfortness of the CLA45(surely in comfort mode) really bad? comparing with e92 M3 or C63 amg?"

** I modified this post because I totally mistook the sports suspension for the performance suspension in AMG driver's package. In my country, AMG dirver's package is not provided by official dealer. My45 has not AMG performance suspension but sports suspension.

I agree, I mean it's only an increase of 20% stiffness front to rear in terms of the spring rates/dampening. And in Canada, with the Driver's package being $2500, wouldn't even consider getting it. Little disappointed the Performance Steering wheel cant be optioned separately for $500, but no way would I pay $2000 for a 20% stiffer suspension. Better to spend the money on some quality coilovers if you really wanted that, or put that $2500 towards a Renntech tune ;)

Jake you are probably the only exception when it comes to actually 'loving' the stiffer ride haha to be quite fair though, you need to be careful defining 'sporty' as feeling harsh bumps and jarring dips in the road isn't sporty! You can have an extremely capable suspension that still soaks up bumps and dips in the road (bit of a stretch, but the MP4-12C is a perfect example), it is all in how the car is dampened and the chosen spring rates. I think because you are young (and coming from a GTi which is also quite rough :p) you don't mind the jarring ride. I would honestly imagine spending the money on some nice KW's would net even better performance capabilities while offering better ride comfort even, though its only guessing until someone does a comparison :p

OP, one thing to note is that in "comfort" mode, the suspension doesn't change. The car doesn't have adaptable suspension settings -- the comfort, sport, and manual settings are purely only related to the transmission and how torque is distributed between the front and rear axles. The suspension itself is the same all the time. I've been in an M3 and I didn't find the ride that bad, it was actually not even as rough as the ride in my previous WRX. I've heard the c63 can be a little rough, but I can't imagine the 45 being any rougher than either of those two!

hi382,
I hope you will allow me to steal and use the word "comfortness"; it is a great, descriptive word. While I have never seen it before, it is the kind of word that could make it into general English use.

Unfortunately my M3 information is two generations old this year. I had a 2004 model that I sold after one year because the ride was too 'harsh'. (When it went over broken pavement, it felt like it had no springs at all.) I have 20 years experience driving real race cars, not street cars modified for track use. In my opinion, that M3 wasn't even a good track car, but it was a poor street car. ALL cars are a compromise, and what is good on the track is bad for general driving. Be realistic with yourself about how the car will be used, and think about that when you read opinions about the 45.

I have test drives only in the 63 and 45. Others can comment on their everyday "street worthiness", (or their "comfortness"). The 45 is a brand new design, with much less engineering in its suspension; the 63 has years of engineering to come to the best compromise. It felt better for general street use in my opinion, but I bought a 45 because it is so damn beautiful. (My car is built, but it is still trying to find a way to cross the ocean.)

Before placing my order, I had a two hour meeting with an AMG representative and test driver. He said, "Do not order the sport suspension unless it will be a track car". (That is a direct quote.) Another opinion: Unless your secondary roads in Korea are better than ours in the US, stay with the 40 profile tires on the 18 inch wheels rather than the 35 profile on the 19s. They 'should' ride better, and you won't bend as many rims.

I drive my CLA45 as my daily ride. Have the performance package and performance seats. VERY uncomfortable. I feel every tiny bump on the road. But I like the car (except the way too narrow performance seats which I regret buying).

I have the performance seats, performance suspension....let me tell you

Toronto....driving threw the city this winter i felt like the whole time i was driving my car i was on radar for grand canyon craters!

some of these roads are SO DAMN GARBAGE....it should be illegal for cars as nice as ours to be on the road during these times.

let me tell you, truthfully, the car is stiff as shit. my buddy and i have gone for 2 hour cruises, city and highway.....hit some pretty quick speeds, which ill keep unposted for safety reasons ;) but lets say it was a blur!

and he left my car saying his lower back was killing

i guess after a while you get use to it! but not going to lie i feel like one day i had back spasms going over a massive bump in the road i couldn't avoid!

its definitely a pain in the ass as a daily drive if your looking for comfort!

but if you want a supermodel.....your gunna have to be willing to deal with the consequences

in return you'll get an amazing car that can take bends much quicker, your confidence is amazing, you will think what a shame with other drives who can't handle corners quickly.

people will stop and stare at how beautiful your car is etc etc.

Just got my 45 on Saturday and love it.
Got Driver's Package, Sport Exhaust, Leather (not Sport) Seats. etc.
I find the combo PERFECT for daily driving!
Can't believe what that factory guy said about track use only. Ridiculous!
I must say I find the exhaust a little buzzy though.
Does that break in? Can it be adjusted? Is it because I specified Sport Exhaust? I thought the sport exhaust just made it fart on the overrun!!

The exhaust starts sounding better after breaking the car in I think. Like now on nice warm days, when I have the window open, the exhaust sounds like a explosion when changing gears. It's so wicked. Omg that reminds me I have a vid of it from last week. Gonna uploaded that in a sec :p

Not sure. I'll see if I can dig it up. In Aus we get drivers pack standard with the slightly stiffer and lower suspension and the option of the performance suspension which from what I've heard they have never sold for on road applications as they don't want to deal with the complaints.

Sport AMG suspension is standard on the CLA45 without the drivers package. Driver's package adds the AMG Performance Suspension and is 20% stiffer than the standard sport suspension. In Australia you get the performance suspension as standard, while it is an option here in North America. There is no suspension option stiffer than the Performance Suspension which you already have.

Not sure that's right. Maybe another Aussie can confirm. When I ordered I had 3 options:

Black wheels
Carbon interior
Amg track suspension

I was told strongly to not go for the suspension upgrade unless I wanted to track the car as the amg sport suspension on the car was as firm as id want to go. I drove the sport suspension and thought it was fine. Way softer than my current 350z track model.

Salesman said if I chose the upgrade I should up my dental plan as the moment I hit a bumpy road I'd be up for some new teeth.

If your right then I my sa is an idiot and you all shouldn't be complaining the suspension was fine. As I said way softer than my current car.

You guys are right. I misunderstood sports suspension. It is totally different from performance suspension in the driver's package.

Code number for the performance suspension is 492. In contrary, it for sports suspension is 486. So two suspensions are totally different!!

It is also WRONG that mbKorea provides AMG driver's package as an default option.

Finally I recognized that I don't have to worry about the performance suspension of my45.

If you are worried about everyday ride quality that would suggest to me that the optional performance suspension wouldn't be to your liking. I think I'm with the majority of people in saying the quality of roads that I personally drive on would make the performance suspension unbearable day to day. Plus to achieve any benefit from it you would need to be pushing the car extremely hard. I've not yet came close to the limits of grip my 45 has with the standard amg sports suspension. Public roads don't allow it.

So amg sports suspension is firm but comfortable for day to day, performance is for putting bmw's and Audi's in there place on the track :) in my opinion.

YNM, similar to you I'm in Toronto and coming from a stock 2011 STI and a WRX before that. I found the 45 to be about as stiff as the STI, so I'm certain that the performance suspension will make the 45 stiffer. I opted out of the performance suspension for that very reason since it's my DD.

3-weeks away from delivery! Is anyone's on the ship Don Juan like mine?
